Citizenship route guide

A structured summary of publicly documented naturalisation or citizenship routes, residence conditions, application steps and official sources. Meeting a residence period never means citizenship is automatic.

Australian citizenship by conferral

The main adult naturalisation route for permanent residents. Applicants generally need four years of lawful residence on valid visas immediately before applying, including the final 12 months as a PR, and must satisfy absence, character, English understanding or citizenship test, continuing residence intention and pledge requirements. PR does not automatically become citizenship.

TimingCheck the official residence-period rule.
